"our vision ..a world free from violence and the fear of violence"

The Africa Feel Free Network :
Strengthening the African Response to Violence and Abuse.

Launched in May 2002, the Africa Feel Free Network against violence now consists of 70 members, 40 of whom are women’s grass root organizations and the rest individuals (Duty Bearers who can influence change in society).

The mission of this network is to provide a platform to unite women’s organizations across Africa along with our international associates, to push for the reform of Bride Price and take it to regional and international law making bodies. The reform of Bride Price would be one specific milestone in reducing or removing traditional barriers to women and children’s access to justice and equality.

This network is open to individuals and groups including state actors, private sector actors and members of civil society organizations and the academe who have expressed interest and share our vision and values of a women-centred, rights based approach to creating a world free from violence and the fear of violence.

The Africa Feel Free Network will help to strengthen already existing networks against violence, and form a strong, united platform to lobby for changes in Uganda, and across the continent.

We recognise that many of you with whom we have already met and many others whom we are yet to meet, have many questions about the network and how best you can fit into it. We do very much encourage you to write back with your comments and suggestions on how we can make this the most effective indigenous network to champion the women’s liberation movement in Africa.

Africa Feel Free Network: Opportunity for Dialogue

There is an urgency to create alternative identities for women in the absence of Bride Price which they strongly identify with. The Network presents a genuine opportunity for dialogue that would lead towards an indigenously driven reform process and encompass cultural transformation with a view to increasing protection for women seeking justice against abusers or violent partners. It would also reduce the significance of Bride Price as a hindrance to women and children’s upward mobility. The Africa Feel Free Network will provide to push for the reform of Bride Price and take it to regional and international law making bodies for example the African Court of Justice, and the United Nations and we welcome allies to join the network.
