Home page : The mission of this network is to provide a platform to unite womens organizations across Africa along with our international associates, to push for the reform of Bride Price and take it to regional and international law making bodies. The reform of Bride Price would be one specific milestone in reducing or removing cultural and traditional barriers to women and childrens access to justice and equality. Conference on Domestic Violence and Bride Price We would like to draw your attention to the forthcoming first Africa wide conference on Domestic Violence and Bride Price. The conference will be hosted by the Mifumi project, a leading womens rights organisation in Uganda. The purpose of the seminar is to unite womens organisations and individuals to lobby for the reform of Bride Price across Africa. We will shortly be making a call for papers and providing you with a programme for the conference. Preventative work with young people. The Africa Feel Free Network has under its ambit, a parallel network of young persons organisations working to promote preventative work with young people. To subscribe to the Africa Feel Free Network, either go to www.mifumi.org or fill in the form enclosed and return to the Network Administrator, Mifumi Project, P. O. Box 274 Tororo. Bride Price is the cultural practice of paying for the bride with cows. The practice requires that the cows be refunded if a marriage breaks down. This often ties women to abusive relationships because they cannot afford the refund. The practice also reduces women and girls to the status of chattel or property and leaves them open to Domestic Violence and abuse with far reaching social, economic and human rights implications. We welcome contributions from readers. Our next theme is Realising womens rights as human rights: from Action to Activism.
